My family buys a 1/4 side of beef every year, and we also stock up on groceries when they are on sale and put them in the freezer. I also regularly make freezer meals. Simply put, our freezer contents are very valuable to us.
I read somewhere that if you take ice cubes and put them in a Ziplock bag, you can use them to monitor your freezer conditions. For instance, if you go out of town for a week and come home to find all of the ice cubes melted and refrozen in a solid block in the freezer bag, you know your power was out for a significant amount of time, and the freezer contents may no longer be good.
This is a simple, low cost method to monitor my freezer contents when we have been away from home for an extended period. Works for me.

such a simple but great idea..thanks!
I never even thought of monitoring this. I can always tell if the power goes out (very, very rare) by the flashing clock radio by my bed, LOL.
Of course, I don’t have a lot of costly meat in my freezer.
Best. Tip. Ever. Why didn’t I think of it?
P.S. How are your blueberry bushes? Mine are still tiny but they look healthy and have new growth.
My mom put two of the blueberry bushes in a pot together until she could figure out where she wanted to plant them, and then she forgot about them until two weeks ago when she found them dead. 🙁 She talked to someone who is hopefully going to give her some more blueberry bushes, so we will try again. I wish we weren’t out the $20 we paid for them, but she was nice to agree to plant them at her house since we don’t have a house. Keep me posted on how yours do!
great idea. I had never head this.
What a great, simple idea!
Great simple and economical tactic, which IMO are the best kind. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
