Why I'm Going Paleo AgainI’ve been struggling with my weight and eating habits for about 18 months now.  I remember how it all started.  It was October, 2014, and my son and I were attending a Halloween dinner theater event.  There were little packages of candy corn on the table.

Now, let me tell you, back in the day, candy corn and creme pumpkins used to be my thing.  I could snarf down way too many of those sugary goodies.  However, that night at the theater, I hadn’t had sugar for about a year.  I thought I’d try just one and see how my body reacted.  I did fine, so a few minutes later, I had one more.  By the end of the night, I had eaten 6 of the candy corns, which isn’t bad IF those were the only sweets I ate.

The Repercussions of Going Off Paleo and Gaining Weight

But that just opened the door to a whole lot of other crap.  I’ve been eating too much junk and gaining weight since then.

While I haven’t gained back all of the weight I lost when I first found out about my food intolerances and went Paleo, I’ve gained back 2/3rds of it.  And I can FEEL the change in my body.

  • My back aches every morning.
  • My knees sometimes hurt.
  • My clothes don’t fit right
  • As the Arizona heat cranks up, I feel more and more uncomfortable.
  • I just don’t like being in my head or my skin right now.
  • I really do feel like an alcoholic whose drug of choice is sugar.

It’s time to get my life back.  I think going Paleo again will help tremendously as when I was on Paleo, I felt great.

I’m Going Paleo with My Daughter

Cuddle Bug is 7.5, and she’s had a rough year this year.

She’s been off milk since she was 14 months old because of a dairy intolerance.  This past January when she took her food intolerance test, for the first time since she’s been tested beginning at age 5, it didn’t show a dairy intolerance.  We cautiously added in dairy about twice a week, using only milk products from grass fed cows.  She said she felt fine after eating it, but we started noticing a few things:

  • She’s been sicker this year than in the past.
  • She’s been sicker longer than usual.  (Just recently she was sick for six days and ended up in the ER getting two doses of IV fluids.)
  • She always feels like something is stuck in her throat.
  • She frequently feels nauseous after eating meals and doesn’t want to eat as much for fear she’ll feel sick.

We thought dairy was the problem, so we took her off that again.

However, recently for Cuddle Bug’s birthday dinner, she had gluten free, dairy free pizza and a vegan gluten free cupcake.  Not 5 minutes after eating, she was on the floor crying and saying her stomach hurts.

Since we’ve taken her off dairy, we’ve noticed she seems to also have trouble with gluten free grains.  We just don’t know which one.

So, for a few weeks, PB & J Girl is going to go Paleo with me, but she’ll still eat white rice and potatoes because she needs the carbs and she seems to tolerate those just fine.

After she seems to be stabilized with her stomach issues, we’ll start carefully introducing gluten free grains, one by one until we find the culprit.
