Whole Hog Direct from the Farmer

What Cuts Are Available?

We could choose standard cuts that the farmer determines, or we could choose our own.  We opted for choosing our own.

The order contained the following cuts and quantities:

Chops, Steaks & Roasts

(Note–The above picture is only of the chops, roasts, and steaks.  Somehow in the process of putting this all away, we forgot to take a picture of the bacon, sausage and ground pork.)

How Much Is a Whole Hog Direct from the Farmer

We paid $550 and got 136 pounds of meat by buying a whole hog direct from the farmer.  That means we paid $4.04 per pound.

I consider this an excellent bargain because we typical pay $4.99 for a 12 oz. package of Simple Truth bacon or $3.50 for a 12 oz. package of Simple Truth sausage.

We almost never buy ham or pork chops at the grocery store.  Instead, we usually get a few pieces in our ButcherBox subscription that we get once every few months, so we got much more pork with this order than we’re used to.

Final Thoughts

I’m glad to have our freezer stocked with pork.  In the late fall, we’ll likely put in another order for 1/4 side of beef, and then we’ll be fully stocked with meat for the winter.
