We began to attack our debt on October 20, 2011. It has been a long journey. There have been successes–and the inevitable setbacks. In 14 months, we paid down a little over $10,000 in debt.
Often, it feels like we will never be debt free, but I keep imagining what life will be like when we have no debt, and that is enough to keep going.
If you, too, are struggling to pay down your debt, you should know that The Debt Movement is here.
What Is The Debt Movement?
The Debt Movement was created by Jeff Rose, the financial planner behind the blog, Good Financial Cents. The purpose of the movement is to help people join together to battle debt. The goal is to pay down $10 million of debt in 90 days. Together, we can do this!
How to Get Started?
If you would like to join the Debt Movement, simply take the first step and sign up for the Debt Movement mailing list. Then, browse around the site. You will receive helpful information about paying down debt. In addition, there are forums where you can discuss your progress, your frustration, and ways to make extra money.
Apply for a Debt Movement Scholarship
You can also try to win some of the Debt Movement’s scholarships. Thanks to generous sponsors, the Debt Movement has $15,000 to give away to help people pay down their debt. (Hello, free cash!) To qualify for a scholarship, you must:
1. Sign up for the mailing list.
2. Complete the Debt Scholarship Application.
3. Keep track of how much debt you have paid off via Ready for Zero (or, alternatively, you can complete a survey every two weeks detailing your progress)
Paying off debt can be a long, difficult journey. I know because it is a journey my husband and I are making right now. Depending on your amount of debt, it may take you years to erase it all.
But it can be done.
And if you join the Debt Movement, you won’t be doing it alone. You will be doing it with hundreds of other people.
