Here are the best (and worst) books for ages 8 to 12 {September 2020}.

Books We Read

This month we finished four books and one audio.  (Five books a month seems to be our magic number.)

The Best Books

We had two favorite this month:

The Best (and Worst) Books for Ages 8 to 12 {September 2020}

The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks

I’m not sure how I’ve never read The Indian in the Cupboard before.  In this classic, Omri puts his plastic Indian into a metal cabinet in his room; to his astonishment, the next morning, the Indian is alive!  Omri does his best to keep his Indian happy, but life gets much more complicated when he lets his friend in on the secret and they put another figure in the cabinet.

This book has 226 pages.

The Best (and Worst) Books for Ages 8 to 12 {September 2020}

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare

we really like the books by Elizabeth George Speare.  In The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit Tyler is running from her home in the Carribean after her parents die and an older man wants to marry her.  She makes her way to Puritan New England to live with her aunt’s family.  She finds life in New England rigid and suffocating.  The only time she feels free is when she’s with a sailor who was on the boat with her during her travel and when she’s with the witch of Blackbird Pond.   Kit has no idea that socializing with the latter can threaten her freedom. . .and even her life.

This audio is 6.5 hours long.

Other Books We Read

The Best (and Worst) Books for Ages 8 to 12 {September 2020}

The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

We all loved The Sign of the Beaver.  Matt and his father leave their family behind in Massachusetts so they can go to their new land in Maine, build a house and plant the crops.  When that is done, Matt’s father heads back to Massachusetts to get the rest of the family, leaving 13 year old Matt to hold down the fort for an estimated seven weeks.  However, he’s gone much longer than that, and Matt ends up befriending a local Indian chief and his grandson.  As the weeks stretch into months and Matt’s family still hasn’t arrived, Matt is faced with a difficult decision.

This book has 135 pages.

Where Is the Bermuda Triangle by Megan Stine

The Best (and Worst) Books for Ages 8 to 12 {September 2020}

Growing up, I remember hearing all of the stories of the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.  In Where Is the Bermuda Triangle, those mysteries are shared, and the explanations for what occured each time are interesting.

This book is 103 pages long.

C.T. Studd: No Retreat by Janet & Geoff Benge

C.T. Studd: No Retreat by Janet and Geoff Benge

I wrote about C.T. Studd: No Retreat in a separate post.  Suffice it to say, even though the book was well-written, we didn’t care for Studd much at all.

This book has 192 pages.
