The Best Book(s)

We had one book that everyone picked as their favorite in April:

A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt by C. Coco De Young

The Best (and Worst) books for Ages 8 to 12 {April 2021}

In A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt, the Great Depression has hit the country hard.  Margo watches as homes in her neighborhood go into foreclosure.  Margo and her mom try to help their neighbors, but then Margo’s own family is in danger of losing their house.  Margo has to write a letter to someone as an assignment for school, and she decides to write to Mrs. Roosevelt and explain her family’s situation.  And then, the unexpected happens.

This book is based on a true story from the author’s relatives.

A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt has 101 pages.

Other Books We Read

The Great Wheel by Robert Lawson

The Best (and Worst) Books for Ages 8 to 12 {April 2021}

This book was a strong second for our favorite book of the month.  The Great Wheel is about Conn Kilroy, who makes the long journey from Ireland to New York City to work for his uncle and make his fortune.  However, he’s dissatisfied laying pipes throughout the city and soon heads West to Chicago to work on the construction of the first Ferris wheel.

This book has 180 pages.

Stolen Girl by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

The Best (and Worst) Books for Ages 8 to 12 {April 2021}

Stolen Girl is set after World War II.  Nadia is finally safe in Canada with her adoptive parents after surviving the war in Europe and a concentration camp.  However, she begins to suffer from flashbacks, and slowly, one flashback at a time, she learns the truth of who she is and why her birth family is gone.

We all enjoyed this book, and I loved that I learned something new about World War II.  This book is based on true events.

This book has 187 pages.
