The Best Books

Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan

Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan

Homeless Bird is about a young girl, Koly, who at 13, is married to Hari.  Like many Indian girls, she leaves her home forever when she marries.  However, she soon finds that she’s been deceived, and her world and well-being quickly spiral downward.  Can Koly find her way in a world that can be cruel to young girls like her?

We all enjoyed this book enormously.

This book is 182 pages long.

So Far from the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins

So Far from the Bamboo Grove is a true story about the author and her family’s desperate flight from northern Korea back to Japan during the waning days of World War II.  Their story is unbelievably grueling and inspiring.  I highly recommend this book.

So Far from the Bamboo Grove is 175 pages long.

The Other Books

Archimedes and the Door of Science by Jeanne Bendick

If your kids love science and math, Archimedes and the Door of Science is the perfect book for them.  The girls and I found it a bit dry (but science and math aren’t our forte).  However, the girls did remember the concepts and tools Archimedes developed, so they got quite a bit from the story.

This book is 135 pages long

Going Solo by Roald Dahl

Going Solo by Roald Dahl

Going Solo is Dahl’s second autobiographical book.  This one is a fascinating read and covers his life in Dar es Salaam and fighting in World War II.  (Read my complete review.)

This book is 210 pages long.

Ida Scudder: Healing Bodies, Touching Hearts by Janet & Geoff Benge

Ida Scudder by Janet & Geoff Benge

Ida Scudder is a true story about a woman who was born in India to missionary parents.  She vows never to live in India when she is grown, but fate has different plans.  (Read my full review here.)

This book is 187 pages long.

Ahimsa by Supriya Kelkar

We listened to Ahimsa on audio, but I think this is one book that might have been better read aloud.  Sometimes I had trouble following it as did PB & J Girl.

This book is based on her great-grandmother’s experience working with Gandhi.  In this story, 10-year-old Anjali must make lifestyle changes when her mother decides to join Gandhi’s freedom movement.  This book is an interesting slice of an important time in India’s history.

This audio is 5.5 hours long.
