e6879447422848ac859df8e4b48354c0I have been fighting a systemic candida overgrowth since April, 2010.  That was when my third child was born, and I had several rounds of antibiotics within 3-4 weeks.

First, I had antibiotics right before my c-section.  Then, about a week after Cuddle Bug was born, I got strep throat and had a round of antibiotics.  Less than a week after I went off them, the strep came back (we later found out Bookworm was a carrier and kept passing it back to us), and I had my third round of antibiotics–all within the span of 3 to 4 weeks.  Ah, candida heaven.

Of course, I didn’t know about systemic candida then.  All I knew was that I started feeling really miserable about four months later, in August.  I figured out I had a pretty severe dairy intolerance, and when I gave up dairy, I thought my problems were over.

Of course, they were just beginning.  I have dealt with food intolerances, leaky gut, and candida for the last four years.

I’ve been on a candida diet twice before, and though my symptoms improved each time, they never totally went away.

Yo Yo Weight Loss

I lost 80 pounds in 2012, only to gain back 25 of them last winter.  (I have seasonal affective disorder and have major sweet cravings in the winter.  I gave in and ate sweets, and of course, the candida came back with a vengeance.)  This last summer, I started eating right again and managed to lose 15 of the pounds I had gained back, only to gain another 25 pounds this winter.


Enough is enough.

I Can Never Eat Sugar Again

I used to have a guilty pleasure I’m a bit embarrassed to admit.  I liked watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians.  I would watch Scott Disick, and I could totally sympathize.

He is clearly an alcoholic.  When he gives up the alcohol, his life goes smoothly.  But then, when everything is going better, he thinks that he can drink just a little.

Which, of course, he can’t.  And soon he’s spiraling out of control.  He probably realizes this pattern, but he keeps thinking he can manage to have just a bit of alcohol.

That’s me with sugar.

And I’ll never get over the systemic candida overgrowth as long as sugar is in my diet.  I can’t eat just a little bit of sugar.  If I start eating sweets, it’s not long before I am completely out of control.  I have to give sugar up completely.

My Plan to Get Healthy in 2015

On December 26th, I started Christa Orecchio’s Candida Cleanse.  I’m 12 days in and feeling pretty good.

I’m also sugar-free 12 days.

That’s a good first step to restoring my health.  Here are the other steps I plan to take:

  • I plan to finish the Candida Cleanse.  (I’m guessing it will take me 6 to 10 weeks total.)
  • I plan to learn how to eat right, so that I finally beat candida.
  • I plan to remain sugar-free.
  • I plan to exercise at least 3 times a week.

Weight loss isn’t my goal necessarily.  Finally being health is.  But I wouldn’t complain, if, on this journey to wellness, I lose the 40 to 50 pounds I’d like to lose.
