I mentioned that I am guest posting at Sustainable Personal Finance on the topic, “Treat the Family Budget Like a Business.”

One of the tools that has helped me with this is Pear Budget.  Every night I enter my expenses, and Pear Budget shows me at a glance how much I have left in each category and if I am over in any category.  (Right now I am over in the car repair category thanks to a car battery that needed to be replaced this past week!)  In addition, you can print out little cards to carry in your wallet to show you how much you have left in each category.  Here is a snap shot of our Irregular Expenses chart up-to-date through today, 1/14:

PearBudget

available irregular categories 01/14
60.00 car insurance
(-53.31) car maintenance
15.00 cell phone
(-8.54) clothing
25.00 gifts
20.00 haircuts
(-35.00) medical
8.33 renter’s insurance
20.00 subway / bus

As one who has struggled with recording all of my expenses, I love this system.  After this month, my husband and I are going to reevaluate our budget compared to what Pear Budget shows we actually spent and tweak our categories.  I should have found this system a long time ago!  Best of all, this program does not require you to enter any sensitive information like credit card numbers or bank account information.  Love that!

Don’t forget, through Monday, you can enter my giveaway for a FREE 6 month subscription to Pear Budget.  If you would like to try it out now, Pear Budget offers a free 30 day trial.
