This post contains affiliate links. My husband had Monday off work, so we decided to take a quick trip to Rochester New York. The girls wanted to see the Rochester Institute of Technology and University of Rochester. We long ago discovered the best time to visit a college campus for the first time is when the students aren’t there. You don’t get swept away in the bustle and hustle, and parking is much easier. However, we also made a pit stop at a cemetery to see the graves of two famous historical figures.
Visiting Colleges
We didn’t get out of the car at Rochester Institute of Technology. Instead, we drove through it and were suprised to see that the campus is somewhat secluded.
We next went to the University of Rochester where we did walk around for a bit.
We liked the old feel of the campus and the statues throughout. One statue we found was of George Eastman, and now we plan to take another trip to Rochester to visit the George Eastman Museum.
Visiting Mount Hope Cemetery
We next stopped at Mount Hope Cemetery, which is a sprawling, hilly, historic cemetery. Our first stop was to find the grave of Susan B. Anthony.
Then, we wound our way to Frederick Douglass’ grave.
Thanks to this cemetery visit, we now plan to visit the Susan B. Anthony Museum and House. In addition, we’ve discovered Rochester has a rich Underground Railroad history and plan to research that more for our New York history curriculum.
Final Thoughts
We enjoyed our quick trip to Rochester New York and plan on going back to the city to explore more later this year.
