How Much Did We Spend?

For December, we spent $1,271.40. Here are the details:

For the year, we’ve spent $16,413.57, or an average of $1,367.80 a month. Last year, we spent $17,232 ($1,436 a month), so we reduced our grocery spending by $818 by 4.7%. That is clearly not the ambitious 18% I hoped for when setting this goal back in January, 2024.

However, the cost of food DID go up in 2024.

In 2023, according to the USDA Thrifty Plan, for a family our size and our ages, we should spend $982 a month.

In 2024, that cost had risen to $1,032, or $50 more per month.

In 2023, according to the low-cost plan, we shouldn’t spend more than $1,058; in 2024, that cost rose by $19 to $1,077.

So, we saved more because our prices weren’t higher in 2024 than in 2023. They were 4.7% lower than I spent in 2023. I’m happy with that.

Final Thoughts

Even though I didn’t meet my ambitious goal, we reduced the price of our groceries by 4.7% in a year when the price of groceries rose again. Hopefully, we can reduce even more in 2025.
