You may have seen the Yahoo! article about all of the scary chemicals in microwave popcorn bags and the popcorn itself. These chemicals have been linked to cancer and ADHD. Plus, microwavable popcorn is expensive.
You can remove the health risk and the high price by making it yourself.
Here’s how we do it:
Homemade Microwave Popcorn
-Melt 2 tbsp. coconut oil in the microwave in a large bowl (you can use expeller pressed so there is no coconut flavor, if you’d like)
-Stir 3/4 cup popcorn kernels into the oil and coat well
Pour the oil & popcorn mixture into a brown paper sack, fold over the top of the bag, and microwave for 3 to 5 minutes. (Our microwave is old, so it takes 5 minutes. If yours is newer or more powerful, it’ll likely take less time.)
-Stop microwaving when the kernels are popping at a rate of one about every 10 seconds.
Let cool, and enjoy!
This is really so simple. We buy a bag of popcorn kernels at Trader Joe’s for about $2. (I buy it from Trader Joe’s because they don’t sell products with GMOs, and I want GMO free popcorn.)
My son loves our homemade microwave popcorn and brings it to school for his snack a few times a week.
This serving size is enough for our family of 5 with some leftover for the next day.
