UPDATE: The winner is Kelsie [email protected] Congratulations!
Where was the book How to Be a Breadhead: A Beginner’s Guide to Baking by Fr. Dominic Garramone, OSB, when I was just learning to make my own bread from scratch?
Remember my pathetic attempt at bread making, and my desperate plea to all of you to help tell me what I was doing wrong?
This book so would have helped me!
We have a standard whole wheat bread recipe that we use, but I decided to experiment and try both the white bread recipe and the whole wheat recipe in this book. The whole wheat recipe in this book is cheaper than the one I make because it doesn’t require vital gluten, honey, or eggs. In fact, if you don’t have a gluten or wheat intolerance, this book is great for those with allergies because many recipes do not call for dairy or eggs.
My family hands down preferred the whole wheat bread from this book, so now this will be the type of bread that I make.
How to Be a Breadhead also demonstrates how to make more decorative breads such as Braided Bread which I served the family last night for dinner. Boy, were they impressed. That bread is pretty enough to be served on the Thanksgiving table.
How to Be a Breadhead contains some excellent recipes and also includes several chapters explaining the history of bread making and what tools you need to make your bread.
If you haven’t yet tried to make your own bread, or even if you have but want some new recipes and techniques, this book is for you.

I got a lesson from a bread-making friend and bought a KitchenAid, but I’m overwhelmed by the “foreign” ingredients and where to buy them. I’ve stalled out. I hope to get inspired to give it a try though.

I do occasionally bake bread, but not for sandwiches because I haven’t found a way to get the texture just right. Plus, my stores have a markdown section where I can get loaves of sandwich bread for 40cents. If I had a fail proof recipe though, then I think I would be very tempted!!!

I love baking our own bread! We mill our own wheat too so it’s a good fit. 🙂 I struggle with finding perfect recipes for the kinds of bread I bake, though, as most people who are switching to homemade after years of store-bought bread have a tough time appreciating the difference, and it’s hard to get it close enough to store-bought!
I have baked our own bread in the past and would like to do so again. I stopped because I had a baby, but she is old enough to start again.
