I know that many people prefer to use their phones to keep an electronic planner, but I’m old school and much prefer a paper and pencil planner. I like to hold it in my hands and see everything at once visually. My current planner runs out in July, so I was excited when The Old Schoolhouse® sent me a copy of the new Hey, Mama! Homeschool Planner for the 2019/20 Year created by Gena Suarez.
About the Hey, Mama! Homeschool Planner
If you’re looking for an all-in-one homeschool planner, this just might be it.
The Hey, Mama! Homeschool Planner is so flexible! It starts in July, and while there are 12 months of calendar pages, there are also blank sheets with Week Of:____________________ and space for scheduling up to five students. I love how flexible this is. You can truly plan in the way that is best for you because the page is essentially blank.
In addition, there is so much useful information here!
There’s information about how to create an academic transcript as well as a blank transcript to fill in. There’s also a checklist of skills learned section.
Each month has a page of encouragement from Gena Suarez with a different topic. I really enjoy these reflections. There a bit like sitting down with a trusted friend and receiving counsel. For instance, for “Anxious,” September’s topic, Suarez suggests that people keep a journal of the Lord’s provisions. Write down the prayers He’s answered as a testament to His ever presence in your life. For January’s topic, “Work in Progress,” Suarez addresses the frustration that all parents sometimes feel toward their children–“I’ve told him that a hundred times. Why does he keep making the same mistake? When will he grow up?” Suarez encourages us to look at God, the perfect parent, and have a mind like Christ.
For each child, there is a “Curriculum Planning” page as well as an Attendance page, and a page to list all of the books the child has read for the year. There’s also a place to list first and second semester goals.
If you intend to buy one, you should hurry as 98% of them are sold, and their are no plans to print more.
My Thoughts on the Planner
I normally use a different planner, but that planner expires in June, so I’ll happily begin using the Hey, Mama! Homeschool Planner. It has everything I need for planning out and recording our homeschool for the next academic year!
Our state is pretty lenient when it comes to homeschooling. I just need to sign an affidavit when each child starts homeschooling and officially withdraw them from homeschooling if they attend public school. That’s it. However, for my own record, I like to write down every assignment planned and completed and keep attendance. I also use my planner to record upcoming appointments and when certain blog reviews are due. This planner looks perfect for doing all of that.
