When we moved into our home, I wasn’t a fan of the kitchen design. The walls are green, and instead of a backsplash, there’s some ugly leaf wallpaper, and the cupboards are outdated. Still a kitchen glow-up was at the bottom of our list of projects that need to be completed.
But, whoever put in our laminate countertops when the counter was installed when the house was built put the seam right in the area where the sink went in. Over time, that seam weakened. When we moved in, the caulking around the sink was coming off. We tried to caulk it ourselves, but that didn’t work.
This year, the wood under the laminate expanded, lifting up the sink. Although it didn’t leak, if we hadn’t taken care of it, it would have eventually leaked into the cabinets.
We discovered that replacing both our kitchen cupboards, counter, and sink would cost $12,500 with a sale one company had. The problem? We didn’t have $12,500 to update our kitchen.
In the end, we went with a different laminate that looked better than our old one and had fancier edging.
We also replaced our sink and faucet. Thentire project cost $4,570.
Although I did not want to replace the counters now, they look much better. And, for the first time in 10 years, I don’t have a ceramic sink but a stainless steel sink, which I’ve always wanted.
Now, we need to rebuild our home maintenance/improvement fund because this has been an expensive year.
