This year, I’m aiming to spend $6,500 total for food for my family.  That amount includes groceries only, NOT toiletries.  We rarely eat out, so the food I buy to prepare at home is what we eat.

Since my husband is paid bi-monthly, the goal is to spend no more than $500 every 4 weeks.  (I don’t calculate the amount spent on a monthly basis but on an every 4 week cycle.)

We try to eat organic veggies and fruit as much as possible, and we try to buy meat that is grass-fed and organic.  We have multiple food intolerances, with the biggies being gluten, corn, and dairy.

Since my mom stayed with us January 2nd – 8th, we’re adding $25 to the budget to cover the expense of feeding her.  Therefore, this four week cycle, I’ll be spending $525 instead of $500.

Here’s what we bought from January 9th to January 15th:

POW WOW $10

POW WOW stands for Produce on Wheels without Waste.  This fabulous organization distributes rescued produce in the Tucson and Phoenix area.  People are given up to 60 lbs. of food for $10.  While most of the food is conventional, some is organic.  (This week the large tomatoes were organic.)  I’d have a hard time sticking to our tight grocery budget without this organization.

Basha’s $28.68

Organic potatoes were $2 for 5 lbs, so I stocked up and bought 40 pounds.  They don’t stay good for more than a few weeks in the Arizona heat (yes, even in the winter), so we’ll be eating potatoes over the next few weeks and then freezing some as Homemade Freezer Friendly Fries.  Everything is organic except the avocados.

Deposit on a Hog Share $75

There’s nothing to show for this yet, but we’re planning to buy 30 pounds of pork as part of a hog share.  Our price will be $260.  The meat will come in March, but I had to pay the deposit this week.

Azure Standard $50.48

We got our monthly order from Azure.  We don’t buy chips or other snackies except Beanitos.  I like to make guacamole for the kids for a snack, and since we can’t have corn, Beanitos are a good alternative.  I also got coconut butter, pumpkin spice, paprika, fresh ginger, and coconut yogurt.

Fry’s $1.73

TOTAL: $185.88

TOTAL For This 4 Week Cycle So Far: $427.60 (things will get interesting now as our four week cycle doesn’t end until 1/29 and we only have $97.40 left to spend!)
