Last fall, I had the pleasure of reading The Occupied by Craig Parshall, and I quickly became a fan.  I was excited to read his new book, The Empowered, and it did not disappoint!

As the book opens, protagonist Trevor Black is at his Carolina beach home, trying to connect with his adult daughter, Heather, whom he has just recently connected with.  (The mother had told Black that she planned to have an abortion and never let him know that she had actually gone through with the pregnancy.)

Things aren’t going to well when Black gets a phone call from a colleague who asks him to investigate a murder that he suspects involve supernatural forces.  Black is soon on the case.

At the same time, Black is offered the chance to speak at a conference for lawyers in New Orleans.  He and Heather travel there for a brief trip, but they end up staying much longer as they try to unravel a local mystery involving voodoo and the disappearance of several young girls.

My Thoughts

This book did not disappoint.  I read it in just a few days.  However, the subject in this book was a bit darker.  While Trevor Black continues to fight demons, the demons are stronger this time, and their crimes worse.  Trevor finds himself in the midst of trying to untangle a child pornography ring.  Even though the topic is not covered in graphic details, the bits that are mentioned are enough to send the reader’s imagination into dark areas.

This book earns 4.5 out of 5 stars on the Mom’s Plans’ scale.

Note: Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
