There have been a few changes around here. Two weeks ago, Bookworm said he wanted to buy his own groceries and make his own food. We definitely encouraged this streak of independence, so we gave him $30 to buy enough food for four days. He did great, and the next week, we gave him $40 to buy enough food for five days. This upcoming week, he wants to buy all his food and make all his meals for 7 days, so we’re giving him $45. The first $30 came out of our spend money because we weren’t sure how he’d do with this experiment, but now the money will be coming out of our grocery budget, and I’ll show you how we both are eating healthy gluten free dairy free food on a budget. (His food is generally not organic, but it is gluten and dairy free.)
Here’s what I bought the week of 11/24 – 11/30:

As you may remember, as part of my original plan to reduce our groceries, I planned to set aside $25 a week for bulk meat purchases. I had built up $98 in that account, so this week I used $51 of that on our 20 pound turkey. (We ate it on Thanksgiving and had leftovers, but we still have 2 gallon size freezer bags of leftover turkey to use over the upcoming months!)
I also buy my Bob’s Red Mill One-to-One gluten free flour at Big Lots because it’s the lowest price I can find.

Bookworm’s Haul – $40
He bought clearance chicken legs, fruits, veggies, black beans, salsa, breakfast sausage and tortillas. During the week, he ate potatoes, chicken and veggies (some of these items were leftover from his grocery haul last week), breakfast burritos, and a burrito bowl. Overall, he’s doing a great job with this experiment!
I was initially skeptical he could pull this off, but he’s been doing a great job eating healthy gluten free dairy free food on a budget! I hope this is preparing him well for when he moves out of the house when he goes to college.
