I grew up reading Russell Hoban books and especially enjoyed the Francine books.  I loved the sweet illustrations by Lillian Hoban, and I loved the story lines.

Recently, Charlie the Tramp by Russell Hoban and illustrated by Lillian Hoban was re-released.  I was excited to share the book with my girls.  We sat down on the couch for our bedtime story and read the book.  What a delight!

Charlie is growing up, but with this comes increased responsibility.  There’s just one problem–Charlie doesn’t want to work.  He wants to be free and on his own.  When his grandfather asks him what he wants to do when he grows up, he shrugs off his responsibilities as a beaver and instead says he wants to be a tramp so he can be free to roam.

Mother and Father let him have a try at being a tramp, so Charlie strikes out on his own and only comes home for breakfast.  Then, he starts coming home for lunch and dinner, too, though he always does a job around the house in return for his meal.

One day, Charlie hears the sound of the water and decides to put a stick at the bottom of the river.  Then, he gets to work building a dam.  Charlie is turning into a beaver, rather than a tramp.

This is a sweet little book about growing up, and your kids will likely enjoy it.  Mine did!
