My girls love being creative, and they love art. While they do a lot of free hand drawing and painting, I thought it would be fun to have them do something a bit more structured. Enter Timberdoodle’s Beautiful Coloring book, part of their 4th grade curriculum.
About Beautiful Coloring
Beautiful Coloring is a fun coloring book. Since it is for middle elementary children, it is simpler than most adult coloring books out there (as is to be expected). However, it’s more than a coloring book as it also teaches children about the color wheel. In fact, the chapters of the book are
- Color Wheel
- Pink & Purple
Each chapter has a variety of pictures to color. Typically, two boxes are given, each with a different design. Then the child should practice each design. (They have two separate blank boxes to do this.) Finally, the child uses the technique to color a picture.
After that type of page, there is at least a page with two different pictures the child can color as they would like. Each chapter focuses on different colors and techniques including warm colors, complementary colors, primary colors, dots, fur effects, scale effects, etc.
Our Experience with Beautiful Coloring
I chose this review for PB & J Girl (3rd grade), but Cuddle Bug (2nd grade) wanted to use it, too. The girls agreed to share the book. I do think it was too advanced for Cuddle Bug. Rather than following the designs suggested in the book, she just colored it like a normal coloring book using the color recommendations on each page.
I really appreciated not only the color wheel and complementary colors lessons in the book, but also the many different design patterns that were taught.
I have enjoyed adult coloring, but sometimes I get tired of just coloring and shading a picture. This book offers techniques that go well beyond that. I’ve learned something along side my girls and will be trying these techniques when I color my next picture.
Meanwhile, even though this review is over, my girls are still coloring in this book, which I think is the highest endorsement. This is a fun book for a budding artist.
