UPDATE: The winner is Kimberly kims2312. Congratulations!
My mother grew up in a time when the main characters in books were Dick and Jane. As she got older, the main characters were the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. While there is nothing wrong with these books, the characters are rather, well, homogeneous. There were not other cultures and traditions represented.
Thankfully, now there is much more variety among main characters. In fact, Barefoot Books, is a bookseller that offers stories representing a global experience. My children are half Japanese, so it is important to me that they learn not only about their American culture but also about their Japanese culture and other cultures around the world. (My husband’s first love, after all, was anthropology.)
According to Barefoot Books, there purpose is multi-fold:
Come discover the world of amazing children’s books! Explore. Imagine. Create. Connect. Give Back. That’s what Barefoot Books is all about. It’s exploring other cultures, our planet, ourselves. It’s making time for make-believe and letting imaginations run wild and free. Most of all, it’s about using the power of stories to nourish the creative spark in everyone and strengthen connections with family, the global community, and the earth.
We had the chance to review Lin Yi’s Lantern. Even though it is targeted for kids ages 5 to 9, my two little ones who are 2 and 4 also listened with rapt attention. The illustrations were beautiful, and the story was a charming one. Not only did my kids learn about a Chinese holiday, but they also learned about giving to others even when you want something for yourself.
The majority of Barefoot Books are this way. Children learn about another culture, but they also learn important lessons. These are books that most parents would love to invest in.
If you would like to purchase some Barefoot Books for the holidays, use the code TWENTY12 to get 20% off your order. In addition, orders over $60 qualify for free shipping. (Please note that if you want to receive your order by Christmas, you must place your order by December 14th.)
