Last year was our first year homeschooling, and I was busy just trying to adapt and thrive.  I was, I’ll admit it, a bit (okay, a lot!) anal retentive.  I had a list, and I crossed everything off.  We did what we were supposed to do.

This year, we’re all much more relaxed, and I’m beginning to find joy in letting go of the structured curriculum.  To that end, I’ve already decided to put regular homeschooling on hold for most of December so we can use an advent curriculum I’m creating.

But, what about Thanksgiving?  Just yesterday at the table, PB & J Girl (6) asked why exactly we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Amy Puetz, creator of Heroes and Heroines of the Past: American History, which we reviewed and loved, has just created a new Thanksgiving curriculum.  Countdown to Thanksgiving: Memory Making Stories & Activities for 14 Days Leading Up to Thanksgiving (aff.) is for children ages 6 to 14 (though younger ones will likely enjoy taking part).

This book is nearly 100 pages long and is broken down by chapters.  Each chapter is one day on the countdown to Thanksgiving.  For instance, there is “14 Days Until Thanksgiving”, “13 Days Until Thanksgiving”, etc.

Each chapter has a story about Thanksgiving, many of which are over 100 years old.  While some stories are about the origins of Thanksgiving, many more are about ordinary people.  For instance, one story is about a young man who refuses to carry his own Thanksgiving turkey home because it wouldn’t look right.  Instead, an older man offers to carry it home for him and teaches the young man a valuable lesson.  Another story is about a young girl who wishes to learn how to make a pie.

Each of the stories is entertaining and has a great moral lesson.

In addition to the stories, each chapter has various activities that range from making a Pilgrim’s collar and hat to Thanksgiving recipes (modern and old), to Thanksgiving skits and songs.

This book is an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the Thanksgiving tradition and increase our own joy and thankfulness.  I’m so excited to read the story and do the daily activities with my kids.  This book will help us transform Thanksgiving from a holiday largely known for gluttony to one of thankfulness.  I can think of no better preparation for entering the Advent season.

Countdown to Thanksgiving retails for $17, but from now until November 7th, use the code THANK to receive $5 off and get the book for $12.  Considering you’ll be able to reuse this every year and create wonderful memories and traditions, this book is well worth the price.

What are your favorite Thanksgiving traditions?
