I graduated from graduate school in the summer of 1999. I walked away with a diploma and a little over $20,000 in student loan debt.
Yesterday evening, 13.5 LOOOOONG years later, I paid off my last student loan.
Whew. It’s like a little weight is off my shoulders.
We started our debt repayment journey in October, 2011. At that time, we owed $57,966.01.
Rather quickly we paid off two credit cards, and then, after a good run at Gazelle Intensity, we stalled. Eventually, we took a step backwards and accrued new debt. It was a very discouraging time.
Then, this year, we took the radical step of using some of our retirement to pay down our last credit card debt. Suddenly, the momentum was back, and we’ve been gazelle intense to pay down my student loan by the end of the year.
Yesterday, we finally did it!
Now, we no longer have credit card debt or my student loan debt. The only debt we have is my husband’s student loan debt he accrued during the last few years getting his Ph.D. That debt is at $29,257.77.
In 2 years and 2 months, we’ve paid down $28,708.24! We’re almost halfway there!
Even though we have quite a ways to go, I’m happy with the progress we’ve made so far.
What financial accomplishment have you made this year that you’re most proud of?
