Grocery Report, April 11 – 17, 2018

April tends to be a busy month for us as many of our yearly obligations end for the summer.  This month, the kids had 4H Fair for archery and Bookworm has had something to do all day Saturday for each of the first three Saturdays of the month.  In addition, my husband had some out of town travel that he just completed, so we’ve been busy. . .And, I wasn’t very diligent about taking pictures of our groceries.  But I did keep track of our receipts, and I promise, next grocery report I’ll have pictures for every purchase!

Just a Few Facts About Us

Our family of 5 chooses to eat mostly organic produce and grass-fed and pasture-raised meats.  I’m Paleo, my daughter is semi-Paleo, and the rest of us are gluten free.  Everyone except my husband is dairy free.  Our goal for 2018 is to spend on average $750 per month (or less) on groceries.

Grocery Report, April 1 – 10, 2018

I did A LOT of grocery shopping over the first 10 days of April, and, well, April is a busy month for us.  I did write down all of my receipts in YNAB (affiliate link) to make sure I kept our budget so I know how much I spent overall, but I may have been a bit derelict in keeping track of it for the blog.  So, you’ll get some pictures, and the grand total of our grocery spending, which was a lot.  (That tends to happen immediately after months where I try really hard not to spend much.)

Here’s what we bought last week:

Fry’s – $24.00

I went to Fry’s on a Saturday morning and found many organic produce discounts.  We did end up throwing one of the sweet potato spirals away because it was just too slimy.  Yuck!  All the rest we used.

Costco – $117.56

I had many of these items on my grocery list for all of March, but I kept putting off buying them to try to stay in budget.  I bought them at the beginning of this month, so hopefully it won’t throw off the monthly budget.

Sprouts, & Costco – $134.93

Not pictured–2 dozen eggs.

In this trip, I spent $41.79 stocking the pantry.  (That includes rice milk, strawberry jam on sale 35% off, 2 packages of grass-fed beef, and 3 boxes of Nut Thins.

Sprouts – $21.00

Half of this trip (the $10 of steaks) was stocking up.  We used the roast and lemons during the week.

Sprouts & Trader Joe’s – $54.00

More Nut Thins and jam, so $12 in pantry stocking.

Additional spending not photographed or tracked by store – $115.98

TOTAL for the first 10 days of April$467.47

TOTAL for March: $747.03

Grocery Report, March 21 – 31, 2018

I worked really hard in March to be under budget, and for quite awhile I was.  Then, all three of my kids got sick the last week of the month, and they all wanted different things.  Bookworm just wanted to eat applesauce; Cuddle Bug just wanted grilled cheese and tuna sandwiches (not together, but separately!) and PB & J girl wanted fruit and bread.  After a week of buying those items over and over again while the food I had bought for our meals for the week sat there, I was no longer under budget.

But, the good news is that thanks to keeping the grocery bill low all month, I didn’t go over budget when they got sick.  So, that’s still a victory in my book!

Vitacost – $43.75

I wasn’t planning on placing a Vitacost order this month, but they had a 20% off sale, and I was getting low on some of our gluten free basics, so I decided to buy them this month.

Basha’s, Sprouts & Trader Joe’s – $29

Sprout’s – $6.00

Grocery Report, March 14 – 20, 2018

This week I hit the clearance jackpot with Udi’s frozen French baguettes.  We used one package to make Meatball Subs, and I served one plain with our Polish sausage and cabbage meal.  We still have 5 loaves left (out of the 8 I bought).  Wish I could find such good deals on this kind of food all the time!

Sprouts & Walmart – $25

This was the sweetest deal!  Sprouts had Udi’s frozen french bread on clearance for $1.99.  They’re also running a 20% off frozen food sale, so each bag of frozen french bread (2 loaves per bag) were just $1.59!  Love it!  The grass fed beef was $3.99/lb.

Costco – $55

Trader Joe’s & Natural Grocers – $36

Trader Joe’s, Basha’s & Target – $23

Not pictured is one other bunch of bananas.

Grocery Report, March 7 – 13, 2018

I’m still planning on keeping my groceries well under budget this month, but Sprout’s derailed my plans a little bit with great clearance deals.  This week was higher than I’d like, but I think I can keep expenses down for the next two weeks.  (I hope!)

Here’s what we bought last week:

Trader Joe’s & Sprouts – $34

Albertsons & Sprouts – $64

I stopped by Sprouts, and they had bars (Luna and Larabars) half off.  The price came out to .50 a bar.  Since we’re often in the car during snack time, and these bars make the perfect snack, I bought 4 boxes.  That threw my budget out of whack this week, but I’m glad to find the deal.

Trader Joe’s, Bashas’ & Sprouts – $40

Fry’s – $14

I had a number of coupons and free Friday downloads for this trip.  The Clif bar and Lindt egg were free (treats for my husband), the green peppers were free and so were the tortilla chips.  The yogurts (for my husband) were on clearance for .59 each.

Natural Grocer’s & Sprouts – $11

My camera flash drive was full, so no picture.  I bought clearance organic corn tortilla shells, 2 boxes of Enjoy Life Foods chocolate chip cookies on clearance, and one bottle of organic Italian dressing.
