Reduce Our Grocery Budget {Week 1 of 52}

We spend a lot of money on food.  While we’re not going to skimp or lower our standards for what we eat (we’re still going to keep buying mostly organic produce and buying gluten free and dairy free food for our food intolerances), I do think there are ways we can reduce our grocery budget using these 11 strategies.

Lower Our Grocery Bill

For the next year, I plan to bring you along as we try to tinker with our system to spend less on groceries so we have more to spend on travel.

In the month of November, I have some special challenges because we need to pay for our turkey and other items we need for Thanksgiving.  We also need to make some bulk purchases from Azure Standard and Vitacost, so we need to be super conservative each week with regular groceries.

Gluten Free, Dairy Free Groceries We Bought This Week

We needed some staples from Costco like green tea, raisins, and seaweed, which are pricey since we buy them in bulk.  At Fry’s, I tried to snag good clearance deals.  I was a little bummed when I got home and discovered that the discounted hummus not only had the seal broken but was halfway open, so that went in the garbage.  We’ll use the chicken for Sundays when we BBQ.

The total for this trip was $34.30 in stock up groceries and $18.72 in weekly groceries.

I also made one more shopping trip that I forgot to photograph.  In that trip, I bought five 3 lb. bags of frozen chicken that were on sale at Fry’s for $4.99.  I also bought some staples from Trader Joe’s like frozen peas and green beans, apples, pears, and sweet potatoes.

The total for the second trip was $24.95 in stock up groceries and $28.82 in weekly groceries.

Our Weekly Grocery Goal

As a reminder, our weekly grocery goal is to spend no more than $125 on weekly groceries and $50 on stock up groceries.  I’m also setting aside an additional $25 a week for bulk meat purchases from places like Butcher Box and U.S. Wellness Meats as well as an occasional 1/4 side of beef purchase.

This week we spent $59.25 in stock up groceries and $47.54 in weekly groceries.
