Our 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum: 2019-2020

Okay, seriously, how did my “baby” get to 5th grade?  PB & J Girl is just one year away from middle school, and that freaks.me.out! We’ve put together our 5th grade homeschool curriculum: 2019-2020, and she officially started the school year in August.  PB & J Girl is a hands-on, visual learner, so we’ll be trying to play to those strengths.

Our 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum: 2019-2020

We’re on Level 4 of the Barton Spelling and Reading Program and plan to continue on.  When she finishes Level 4, we’ll move on to Level 5.  Per Susan Barton’s recommendations, we’re not yet doing an independent writing or grammar program, but we’ll start that after Level 4.

Our 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

When she finishes Level 4 of Barton, she’ll use Jump In for writing and IEW’s Fix-It Grammar: The Nose Tree for her grammar.  This will likely occur midway through the year.

Fix It! Grammar Review

She will listen in to her sister’s Sonlight Level C curriculum, but for her own history, we’re using Beautiful Feet Books Ancient History Intermediate.  (Look for a full review of this program on Friday!)

To supplement and give her more of the hands on activities she desires, we’re using History Unboxed.

She loves art, so we’ll be using several products:

ArtAchieve is still available on SchoolhouseTeachers.com, so we’ll be using this as long as it’s there.  We both love that each lesson incorporates social studies/cultural details to enhance the art lessons.

Creating a Masterpiece

We’re currently reviewing Creating a Masterpiece and enjoying it.  This time, we’re working on the drawing lessons.  (We’ll be reviewing this on the blog in just a few weeks.)

Drew’s Art Boxes

We’ve ordered the first two Drew’s Art Boxes she wanted, Fluid Art (discontinued as of 8/15) and Lion Portraits.  I love that everything comes in one box, so I don’t have to shop for art supplies to use this program.

This year we’re going to use Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day, as well as the accompanying Zoology 1 Notebooking Journal.  To round out our study, we will focus on the Birds of Arizona Field Guide.

There is an American Heritage Girl badge that corresponds nicely with this, so we’ll also work on that.

She already has Bible reading as part of the Beautiful Feet Books Ancient History program, so we’ll also be reading biographies of various saints and The Church Rocks! A History of the Catholic Church for Kids and Their Parents and Teachers.

We’ll also work on memorizing the things she does not know on this list of What Every Confirmed Catholic Should Know.

We’re currently using CTC Math 5th grade and will continue with that one.  She’ll also be using Matific for supplemental math work.

Next week I’ll share our 4th grade homeschool curriculum.

  1. we’ve used jump in, good program.
