Another month, more great stories! Now that we get ABA in house two days a week, we’re not driving quite so much, so our book consumption has decreased a bit, but we’re still reading plenty.
Books We Read
Per our usual, we had four books we were reading at once. We finished only one in January and will likely finish the rest in February:
Grace by Mary Casanova
My girls are still on their American Girl book kick, so this month, one of the books we read was Grace by Mary Casanova. In this story, Grace goes with her mom to Paris to help her aunt who is having a baby. Grace suffers from homesickness and culture shock, but then she adapts and finds she really enjoys Paris. Throughout, she takes care of a stray dog and tries to find a business she can start with her friends when she gets back home.
Audio Stories We Listened To
We listened to a number of really good audio stories this month:
On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer
On My Honor was a short but powerful story of two 12 year old boys, Tony and Joel. They head out to climb the rocks at Starved Rock Park, but instead, Tony diverts to the river, strips naked, and goes for a swim. Joel joins him, despite his disgust with the river that smells like dead fish. Soon the boys are having a swim race, but Joel, who thinks Tony is just a bad swimmer, doesn’t realize that Tony actually can’t swim. To make matters worse, the river is filled with eddies and undertows. When Joel reaches the destination, he turns around. . .and Tony is gone.
This is a powerful story about everyday choices and how they can change our lives in an instant.

Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh
Harriet lives in New York City, and she has busy parents. Harriet fills her days by spying on friends and neighbors and writing less-than-flattering things about them in her notebook, hence the title, Harriet the Spy. Her life is upturned when her beloved nanny gets engaged and moves away. Immediately after, her spy notebook is uncovered, and all of her friends find the rude things she has been writing about them. Suddenly, Harriet finds herself alone, excluded by her friends and without her beloved nanny. Yet, she still hasn’t learned her lesson.
I found this book a bit frustrating because it seemed to take Harriet FOREVER to realize the error of her ways!

The Good Dog by Avi
The Good Dog is told from the perspective of dogs, especially the leader of the all the dogs of the town, McKinley. When Duchess, a dog with an abusive owner, runs away, McKinley, along with his “pup” (the boy of the family he lives with), goes out to find her. He finds her with a she-wolf. The she-wolf is spotted, and seemingly the whole town is on a hunt to kill her. McKinley is the only one who can save her.

From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by Elaine Lobl Konigsburg
Claudia Kincaid, in From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, is feeling bored and unappreciated in her large family, so she plans to run away for a bit. However, since Claudia is bad with money management, she also brings along her brother, Jamie, who has quite a bit of money. They end up running away to New York City and living in the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art. Once there, she finds a beautiful statue donated by Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Is it a Michelangelo? Claudia must find out, and the only way is to pay a visit to Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler.
We all enjoyed this book.

The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
The girls loved The Penderwicks! The Penderwick family consists of four daughters, ages 12, 11, 10, and 4, and their widowed father. They rent what they think is a cottage for summer vacation and find instead it is a beautiful estate run by the Tiftons. Mrs. Tifton is a difficult woman to please, but her son Jeffrey is the girls’ age and the perfect summer companion to all of their adventures and mischief.
