Hiding Places by Tori Kelly: A Review and Giveaway

I’m always looking for music with a deeper meaning than the simple pop music on the radio.  I recently received a copy of Tori Kelly’s new album, Hiding Places, due to release September 14th, and it is unlike anything I’ve listened to before.

Tori Kelly grew up listening gospel music, and she wanted to return to her roots in this album.  What can I say?  Her voice is powerful and strong and beautiful.  She never sounds like she’s straining, and the full choir that sings back up for much of the album lends an extraordinary richness to the music.

In an interview with Sheen, Kelly said she named this album Hiding Places because

I just love the idea of God being this hiding place, this place of peace and safety and refuge. That’s really how I feel when I’m singing, any song, but especially when I’m singing about God when I’m singing gospel music. The verse is really the staple for this project. Another thing I realized is that so much of gospel music involves the struggle. Gospel is rooted in singing about the hard times. The songs aren’t there to make you feel good. Even though they should still make you feel good. Some are really fun actually. But they also come from a hard place. I think that’s what I love so much about gospel, because you’re singing from a place of struggle. It’s like you’re crying out to God, and asking, ‘Why is this happening?’ and ‘How I do get through this? God help me get through this.’ This played a really big part in naming the album Hiding Place, because these songs, for me, they are my hiding place.

If you’re looking for beautiful music with an uplifting message, this may be the album for you.

I would love to win because I am highly anticipating this album. I discovered Tori when she was on her first tour. I kept hearing about her and a radio station gave discounts and tickets were like $15. I went and was blown away! Then to discover her love for God, how humble and sweet she seemed made me even more interested. I have been following her since and have watched her evolve. I am so happy she has teamed up with Kirk Franklin for this project and the songs she has previewed so far have been nothing short of amazing. This is Tori’s time!
