{Why} Motherhood Matters by September McCarthy: A Book Review and Giveaway

This year has been a tough one.  We’ve grappled with our child’s autism diagnosis and spent so much time in therapy.  It’s exhausting, and sometimes I look at my life and think it’s not what I dreamt of when I imagined having a family.  For awhile after the diagnosis, I really mourned the hopes and dreams that I had for my family.

What gives me peace, even in the midst of so much turmoil, is knowing that God has a plan.  I don’t know what that is, but I am content to do the best that I can and know that in God’s time, I’ll understand.

This fall, I received {Why} Motherhood Matters by September McCarthy for review, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.  McCarthy is a mom to many.  She also struggled with miscarriages before she had her children, so she knows many facets of motherhood and the intense desire to become a mother.

I loved this book!  This book has four parts:

Part I: {Why} You Are Not Alone

Part II:  {Why} We Cannot Live Motherhood by the Seat of Our Pants

Part III: {Why} You Will Lead Them in the Way They Should Go

Part IV: {Why} Giving Your Children a Reason to Change Makes All the Difference

There are so many smart strategies and words of wisdom in this book that I found myself earmarking pages constantly.  I plan to go back to the earmarked pages now that I’ve finished the whole book and use the techniques that McCarthy suggests.

For me, the most helpful sections were those that encouraged mothers to take time for themselves and to spend time with God and their husbands.  Too often, it’s easy to get lost in our mothering role and forget all of the other roles that we have and the other “loves” in our lives like God and our husbands.  The other section that was most helpful were those about raising your children to get along, have empathy, and contribute to the family and later, society.

If you feel like you’re struggling in your role as mother, I highly recommend this book.  McCarthy has empathy and solid suggestions for improving your situation.  This book came to me at the perfect time, and I’m very thankful!
