Homeschool Crew Review: In the Reign of Terror

Cuddle Bug would like nothing more than to get all of her education through read alouds.  I happily oblige and read her many books, but sometimes it’s nice to get a break, and sometimes she likes to hear others reading.  I’ve quickly found that not all audio books are equal; some are simply fluff.  However, we’ve discovered, through several reviews for Heirloom Audio Productions, that you can’t go wrong with their excellent productions.  The latest one we experienced is In the Reign of Terror.

About Heirloom Audio Productions

Heirloom Audio Productions is a company that prides itself on producing the best audio stories possible.  They are succeeding, at least for our family, because we haven’t been disappointed yet!  Whenever they create an audio story, they take the cast to the place where the story takes place so the actors can experience the locale for themselves.  (Check out the video below when Heirloom Audio Productions takes the cast to Scotland for the recording of In Freedom’s Cause.)

Thus far, Heirloom Audio Productions has recorded several audio books from G.A. Henty’s famous novels:

We’ve had the privilege of reviewing all of those with a link, and we’ve loved each of them and the powerful stories they tell.

About In the Reign of Terror

In the Reign of Terror is an over two hour long audio story and follows the story of Harry, a 16 year old boy who visits France.  He works as a tutor for the Marquis de St. Caux, and while doing that, he saves some of the children from a rabid dog.  This helps cement his relationship to the family.  Harry becomes almost like one of the family when he and one of his charges, Ernest, are able to kill an animal that has been terrorizing the area.

While Harry enjoys a good relationship with the family, the French Revolution broils in the background.  The family splinters in an attempt to save themselves with the girls of the family going in one direction, and the boys going in another.  The story is packed with action, especially as the family members fight for their lives, even though they’ve done nothing wrong.  They’re just caught up in the frenzy of the French Revolution.  Their only crime is having a title.

The audio in these stories is top notch.  Toward the end of In the Reign of Terror, there is a scene where part of the action takes place underwater, and I felt like I was underwater while listening.  What suspense!

Additional Resources

As part of our review, we were given additional resources including:

  • In the Reign of Terror available online
  • In the Reign of Terror original e-book
  • Official soundtrack
  • Printable cast poster
  • Study guide and discussion starter
  • Inspirational verse poster
  • Desktop wallpaper download
  • Official script download

While we loved all of these extras, the one I appreciate the most as a homeschool mom is the study guide.  This guide gives background info on G.A. Henty, Maximilien Robespierre, and Marie Antoinette.

In addition, the study guide has three main sections:

  • Listening Well Questions (simply to check your child’s comprehension of the story)
  • Thinking Further Questions (to delve deeper into the story and the characters’ motives)
  • Defining Words (to help grow your child’s vocabulary)

Throughout the study guide are sections that contain information to learn more such as a recipe for French bread and details about 18th century fashion, just to name a few.  (I love these sections.  They really help to bring history to life!)

At the end of the study guide, there are resources to learn more about The French Revolution as well as a Bible study and a historic context for the story.

You can access the extras and the study guides in addition to receiving physical copies of the stories delivered to your house by joining the Live the Adventure Club.
