Homeschool Review Crew: Zonderkidz The Beginner’s Bible

The Beginner's Bible {Zonderkidz}

PB & J Girl (8) wanted a Bible of her own, but the Children’s Bible I had was too difficult for her.  We had the chance to review The Beginner’s Bible by Zonderkidz, and it was just perfect for her!

First released in 1989, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, The Beginner’s Bible has been redesigned with new art work.  Zonderkidz also has a website that includes many extras parents and kids can use with The Beginner’s Bible.

About The Beginner’s Bible

PB & J Girl is reading at an early 2nd grade level, and this book was at just the right level for her.  Cuddle Bug is reading at a late kindergarten level, and this book was a bit too difficult for her still.

This book is 511 pages long and includes 96 Bible stories, 48 from the Old Testament and 48 from the New Testament.  In the back of the book, there is a three page glossary.

Each page has a large, colorful picture to help hold kids’ interest and help them decipher the story.

How We Used The Beginner’s Bible

We already study the Bible as part of our homeschool curriculum, so I just let PB & J Girl have this to read through on her own.  I frequently found her reading this early in the morning either by herself or to Cuddle Bug.

Our Thoughts on This Book

PB & J Girl loved the pictures on every page.  She also liked that there were only about six to eight sentences on each page, so reading the book wasn’t overwhelming.  PB & J thought the people in the pictures were a bit modern; for instance, the women sometimes had earrings.

Cuddle Bug said that because she already knew the Bible stories contained in the book, she could tell which story it was just by the illustrations, even though she couldn’t read the text completely.  She enjoyed that the pictures were realistic and good at showing each person’s emotions, which helped explain the story.

Crew Disclaimer

  1. I bought this Bible for my daughter’s first Easter and have enjoyed reading it to her over the last couple years. The short, simple stories and vivid pictures are great for keeping a toddler’s attention – I’m glad to hear that older children enjoy it, as well… sounds like this is a great book my daughter can grow up with.
