Chores: The Only Way We Keep Our House Clean When Homeschooling

When you homeschool, you and your children are in the house all.the.time.  That means there isn’t an opportunity to do a good, deep cleaning because, well, the kids are there all day long creating new messes.

We’ve tried different chore programs without much luck.  Our house was still messy and cluttered.  You know how some people say that they try to keep their houses 30 to 60 minutes away from company ready?  Well, our house was two days away from company ready!

I’m not a neat freak by any means, but the clutter and the mess was getting to me.

Over Christmas break while my mom was here, we did some deep cleaning and decluttering of the girls’ toys, the girls’ bedroom, our pantry, and the master bedroom closet.  We still have more to declutter, but it was a good start.

Then, I set to work creating a chore schedule for our three kids.

This is what I came up with:

All kids every morning before 8 a.m.–Make bed, put dirty clothes in the hamper in my room, put dishes from breakfast in the sink, brush teeth, and get dressed

All kids before our 11 a.m. break time–Pick up around the house for 10 minutes.

Girls (ages 6.5 and 8) Daily Chores

  • Pick up livingroom
  • Put clean clothes away
  • Do the daily chore

The daily chores for them are

Monday–clean their bedroom closet

Tuesday–sweep and mop kitchen (they alternate who does which chore)

Wednesday–vacuum living room and hallways

Thursday–Clean bathroom together

Friday–Clean bedroom thoroughly and vacuum

Sat. & Sun. Dad decides the chore.

Bookworm’s (age 12.5) Daily Chores

  • Pick up bedroom
  • Put clean clothes away
  • Unload the dishwasher
  • Do the daily chore

The daily chores for him are:

Monday–vacuum the spare bedroom

Tuesday–vacuum his bedroom

Wednesday–thoroughly clean his bedroom desk

Thursday–mop the hallways

Friday–mop the kitchen

Sat. & Sun. Dad decides the chore, but usually he washes his bedroom sheets one of these days

Mom’s Chores

My chores as mom include sweeping the kitchen on the days that the girls don’t do it, cooking, doing dishes, cleaning the kitchen island (our clutter hot spot), vacuuming the living room when the girls don’t do it, doing a load or two of laundry daily, paying the bills, and budgeting.

I created this chore chart based on the advice I gleaned from Is Your Child a Money Master or a Money Monster?  I highly recommend this book!

Our system has been in place for about 5 weeks now, and it’s working great.  The kids know what is expected of them, and our house is much cleaner now.

  3. You have a great system going for your chores. I’ve not been fortunate enough to be home to install any type of routine. Now, my kids are teens, and it’s a little harder to get them to take care of such things.

    • Training them to do the chores has been the hardest part because for a few weeks, I had to be with them every.step.of.the.way! So I can see why you’d have difficulty.

  4. Chores are so important for children, not just to keep the house in order but to train them to take care of their things and prepare them for managing their own households some day.

  6. We’ve done something similar in our home since the kids were little and it’s made all the difference now that they are older. Their rooms are never messy. Beds are typically made right after they get up or at least sometime in the morning. We usually pick up once a day and put things back in order and then on Friday after school we do a deep cleaning with vacuuming, dusting, mopping, bathrooms, etc. It sure makes the house function a lot better when we work together! Nicely done!

  8. Good system! I noticed that the clutter went way, way down once my kids reached 13.

  9. That sounds like a great plan. My biggest issue with chores and keeping our house clean is consistency. I have great ideas, and they work for a few days while I remember to use them. Then I get busy or distracted or whatever, and everything falls apart again.
