Cuddle Bug is in the process of learning to read, but a few of her speech issues make it difficult for her to say sounds the proper way. Thinking a fun way to study phonics might help her, we tried Fun-Time Phonics!™ Software – 2-PCs Win Download by The Critical Thinking Co.™.
About Fun-Time Phonics!™
This product is part of the five app Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic Before Kindergarten!™ bundle by The Critical Thinking Co.™ It is a downloadable app for Windows only and has the following system requirements:
Platform: Windows® 10/8/7
CPU: 1 GHz or faster
Disk Space: 500 MB
Fun-Time Phonics!™ has four main sections:
Section 1: Includes beginning sounds, ending sounds, vowel sounds, and words that rhyme
Section 2: Teaches short vowel sounds and the letter that makes that sound
Section 3: Teaches consonant-vowel coarticulation
Section 4: Teaches children to use the skills they’ve learned to read their first words!
To keep kids interested, there are a variety of activities, and the lessons are fairly short. Parents can choose which percentage correct will allow their child to move on to the next lesson–65%, 75%, 85% or 90%.
In the parent dashboard, you can see what activities your child has completed as well as how successful they were at the activities.
You can also view upcoming activities to see what is ahead for your child or to start further into the program if the beginning of the program is too easy for your child.
Cuddle Bug used this program a few times a week. Initially, I had the program set so that she had to get 85% correct to move on to the next lesson. This frustrated her greatly because if she didn’t get 85%, she had to do the whole lesson over again, sometimes multiple times. Since some of the sounds were ones that she had difficult with because of her speech issues, she couldn’t get 85%. (As you can see in the above chart, she could only get 50% on some of her challenging sounds.) I lowered the percentage she had to get correct, and she was much happier. I’m glad the program has this flexibility.
Cuddle Bug overall enjoyed the activities. They were short and held her attention span. One of her favorites was when the word was said, and she had to click on the picture that showed that word. I appreciated that she could click the wavy lines below the picture to hear it pronounced again.
Our only complaint is that, while the individual activities were short, there were quite a few per lesson–usually 15. Cuddle Bug’s attention is short, and sometimes 15 or 20 activities were too much for her and she’d want to stop mid-lesson.
If your child enjoys using the computer for learning and you’re teaching your child letter sounds and how to read, you may both benefit from Fun-Time Phonics!™. Depending on your child’s reading ability, this program would be suitable, in my opinion, for kids from age 3 to 7.
