Our Semi-Annual 1/4 Side of Beef Purchase – October, 2016

14sidegrassfedbeefOne of the best ways to save on grass-fed beef is to buy it direct from the farmer.  We’ve found a local source, and twice a year, we buy 1/4 side from him.  We just picked up our latest order last week, and I’m so excited to have our deep freezer filled with healthy beef to last through the fall and winter.

If you haven’t yet bought meat direct from the farmer, know that you can save quite a lot buying this way.  Also, our farmer offers 100% grass-fed beef, so it’s healthier than a lot of meat available in the store.

We received with our order:

1 package of tallow,
whole tongue (this is all my husband’s to enjoy as it grosses me out),
1 oxtail,
12 liver,
2 – 1/2 heart,
3 chuck roasts,
1 eye of round roast,
1 round bone roast,
25 packages burger,
1 big & 3 little packages of soup bones,
3 London broil,
1 brisket,
3 rib eye steaks,
2 T-bone steaks,
2 sirloin tip steaks,
3 top sirloin steaks,
2 Porterhouse steaks,
1 tenderloin steak,
1 tri-tip steak,
2 bottom round roasts
4 ribs,
3 packages of stew meat

Technically, we only paid for the burger, steaks, roasts, etc.  The organ meat was added on for free.  So, I thought I would compute our overall cost with both the organ meat and without.

Overall, we paid $656.00 for this order of beef.

Without the organ meat, we had 100 pounds of meat, or $6.56 per pound.

However, the organ meat and tallow was an additional 35 pounds of meat, bringing our total of meat to 135 pounds.  When I use that total, we paid $4.86 per pound for everything!

We’ve also ordered a 1/2 side of pork and should be getting it in the next week or two.  I’ll let you know what we get when we get it.

Do you order meat directly from the farmer?  If so, how much do you pay per pound?

  1. I had to find my receipt. This is the first year I’ve bought a cow and had the expense of the slaughter as well. I crunched the numbers and it comes out to $2.84 for the entire cow 582 pounds. We love how tender the meat is. The last meal I made was a brisket in the slow cooker. It was salivatingly delicous.
