The Happiness Dare by Jennifer Dukes Lee: A Book Review and Giveaway!

Who couldn’t use a little more happiness in their lives, right?  That was my thought when I decided to read The Happiness Dare by Jennifer Dukes Lee.

Written from a distinctly Christian perspective, Lee first reminds us that God wants us to be happy.  She shares a bit of her own experience searching for happiness, and then she includes one of the most important elements of the book–The Happiness Style.

You can determine your Happiness Style by either going online and taking a test, or by using the test at the end of the book.  Lee outlines five different happiness types:

The Doer–This type is most happy when they are doing thing and crossing items off the end of their to do list.

The Giver–This type of person derives joy from helping others and giving to them.

The Relater–This person likes to talk to other people and make connections.  At a party, this person would be mingling and socializing with everyone!

The Experiencer–This type yearns to have spontaneous, unplanned adventure.

The Thinker–This person needs time alone to think and process.  This type loves to read books and is sometimes thought of as aloof.

I had my whole family take the test, and the results were interesting.  I came out as a Thinker followed closely by a Doer.  My husband is a Doer followed closely by a Thinker.

Once you find your type, Lee directs you to learn how to be happy, to exercise your happiness muscle, so to speak.

She offers four principles to become better at being happy:

The Principle of Small Daily Gains

The Principle of Good Enough

The Principle of Putting Up Your Dukes

The Principle of the Head-to-Foot Alleluia

Overall, I found this book enlightening.  My mom, I am almost certain, is a relater, and she always pushed me to go out with people, do things, etc., but that just made me tired and miserable.  Once I read this book, I realized that my type, Thinker, is better off going out once in a while and taking time at home to reflect and think.  No wonder I like to read and write so much!  Realizing this is my happiness type made me feel better about my choices.

I’m generally a fairly happy person, but I plan to use Lee’s strategies to make happiness less transient in my life.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars on the Mom’s Plans’ scale.

Note: Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
