The League and the Lantern by Brian Wells: A Book Review and Giveaway

the-league-and-the-lantern-bookWhile we still homeschool in the summer, we generally have more time because we don’t have extracurricular activities going on.  That means I institute “quiet time” for 30 minutes a day.  During that time, all of us read quietly.  Bookworm is already a voracious reader, but thanks to quiet time, he reads even more in the summer.  One book he recently read (as did I) and enjoyed was Brian Wells’ The League and the Lantern.

This book starts out as an ordinary tween, misfit book.  Jake Herndon is on his way to a new student orientation/sleepover at a museum in Chicago.  Sixth grade wasn’t kind to Jake, so he’s hoping for a new start at a new school in 7th grade, but on the way to the orientation, he spills a hot dog on his shirt and ends up drenched in a fountain.  Not a good start.

However, the book quickly changes direction when thieves break into the museum shortly after the orientation begins.  Jake, along with his new found friends, TJ and Lucy, manage to escape the bad guys and the museum.   They set off to find help for the other kids that are still trapped in the museum, but as it turns out, the three kids will all need help themselves!

The rest of the book is a fast-paced adventure/thriller as the three new friends seek to unravel a mystery, at the center of which is Jake’s adoptive parent, Gabe.

However, things are not as they seem, especially when all the signs seem to point to Gabe being one of the bad guys.

We loved this book because of its fast pace and for all of the historical references throughout.  It didn’t hurt that the story is set in our old stomping grounds of Chicago and that it featured one of Bookworm’s favorite historical figures, Abraham Lincoln.

In addition, the website for The League and the Lantern has additional, supplemental materials–a vocabulary study guide broken down by grade level (5th through 8th), and a smaller guide to one of Lincoln’s most famous speeches as well as the Bible verses it was based upon.

If you’re looking for a suspenseful book for your middle schooler that weaves a good story but doesn’t contain questionable content, you can’t go wrong with this book.
