September, October, November and December 2011 Financial Goals Update

I set new financial goals at the beginning of 2011, and this is my final recap.  Happily, I reached most of the goals.  🙂

Husband starts a teaching and/or research job by September. **COMPLETED!**  My husband moved from his research position and started his post-doc on December 16, 2011.  He is currently revising his dissertation and plans to have his diploma by May, 2012.

I will bring in at least $6,000 to the family budget.  **COMPLETED!**   Through freelance writing, virtual assistant work, blogging and advertising, I have now brought in $12,321!!

Sell $1,500 worth of “stuff” around the house. **COMPLETED!**  We sold $1,558.58 worth of our stuff.  Truthfully, I am shocked that this goal was accomplished because I came up with that number thinking we were going to have a garage sale this year, which we didn’t.  All of the money we have earned is simply from selling our “stuff” on eBay and Craigslist.

Keep our emergency fund above $12,000.  FAILED!  We decided during the late summer to take some out for debt repayment, and we also had a series of unexpected expenses, many related to my husband’s job and all of the conferences he had to attend.  Our emergency fund is now a meager $2,000, and we plan to leave it at this amount until all of our debt is paid off.

Spend no more than $25 a week going out to eat. **COMPLETED**  Between our food intolerances and our aggressive debt repayment, we did not go out much at all.  In addition, I sold my Dining Out Challenge blog as I found it difficult to keep up when I was not eating out frequently.

Spend less than $400 on all gifts this year. **COMPLETED**  I ended up spending $294.74 for Mother’s Day, Easter and Christmas presents for my husband, 3 kids and mom.

Close my eBay business. **COMPLETED**  I have sold all of my eBay inventory and tubs.  As soon as I file my tax returns, this business will be nothing but a distant, bad memory.

Did you set goals in 2011?  Were you able to accomplish them?  Will you be setting goals in 2012?

  1. I just want to tell you that I appreciate your honesty in finances. I, thank God, do not have debt above living expenses, but reading your blog inspires me to live below and not at my husband’s earnings. We have read Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, but I worked on a budget after reading your blog. We are ahead of the game with a budget for next year too. I am truly looking forward to having a savings account!
Thanks and keep up the great work!

  2. Woo-Hoo! Great job!

  3. Well done! I am particualrly impressed with your income.

  4. Just wondering…..why was the ebay business bad? I just started following this site & I’m currently working on selling a bunch of junk on ebay. I’m hoping I’m not wasting my time with the ebay thing…

    • If you are selling stuff you have around the house, you are probably not wasting time. We just did that and made $600. The eBay business was just a bad idea. I started selling kids designer clothes, and the work was much more than any money I earned, especially after the economy tanked in 2007. eBay may work for others, but it certainly didn’t for me as a business.

      • Ok, thanks for letting me know that! I was worried that it wasn’t worth my time to get rid of JUNK that’s laying around my house. On to search for more junk!! lol

  5. Great job on the extra $6000 WOW! you can definately pay off some debts with that

  6. I hit most of my goals for 2011, but not as much as I wanted. I definitely need to kick my ass for 2012!

  7. Julie Hoy says:

Well, last week I made $200 selling junk on ebay. I thought I was going to get to snowflake that but my TV went out!!! We had to buy a new bulb/lamp for it ($167)…….arrrrrrrrggggg!!
Am currently putting more stuff up on ebay…

    • Good work with the eBay sales! At least you didn’t have to take the tv money out of your regular budget thanks to the extra you generated.

  8. Julie Hoy says:

Woohoo!!! I just paid off a credit card! I was able to sell enough “junk” on ebay in the last 3 weeks to completely pay one card off! Gotta love that!
