Earn an Extra $1,000 a Month – The Launch of Grand Per Month

Long-time readers of Mom’s Plans know that I am all about earning extra money, especially if I can earn it working from home.

In Pursuit of Extra Income

One year ago last January, I was desperate to find a way to make some money working from home.  My leave of absence from having the baby was going to end in August, and unless I could find a way to supplement my husband’s income, I would have to go back to work, which I didn’t want to do, especially since the cost of childcare in our area would eat up the majority of my income.

I was lucky to find a blogger who needed some virtual assistant work done and another blogger who needed a staff writer.  (Endless thanks to My Journey to Millions and Free from Broke!)  From those two jobs, in just a few months through word of mouth referrals, I was able to earn a substantial income and have several clients.  Now, 10 months after I took my first job, I have earned $2201 for December, and the month isn’t over yet.  I am shocked that I have been able to bring home more each month for the last few months than I would have if I had returned to my job and had to pay for childcare.  This is truly the best of both worlds–I am able to do work that I enjoy and supplement our family’s income AND take care of my kids at home.

Learn How to Make $1,000 a Month

I know, from the many comments I get from readers, that others are also looking for a way to earn extra money.  Some want to earn money so they can stay home with their kids, others want to pay off debt or save for a car or a home.  Each family is unique and has their own reasons for wanting to earn extra money.  The fact is, we live in a world where it is easier to earn a side income, thanks to the internet, than it was for previous generations.

Because I know how much $1,000 a month has changed my family’s lifestyle, I was excited when Cash Flow Mantra contacted me about working with him and Derek from Life and My Finances on a new blog, Grand Per Month.  This blog, which is set to launch on January 2nd, focuses on ways people can make an extra $1,000 per month working about an additional 15 hours a week.  Because the three of us come from different walks of life and are each able to earn $1,000+ a month ourselves, we will be able to offer different areas of expertise on ways to earn that money.

Each month, at least two different side jobs will be featured including ways to get started and what costs you can expect to incur.  In addition, there will be posts documenting how an additional $1,000 a month can dramatically change your financial situation.

I wish this site would have been around a year ago when I was trying to make money to help support my family.  I hope a Grand Per Month will be helpful to you and that it will be one of the blogs you bookmark.  Here is to 2012, and all of us earning a little more money in the new year.

What would you do with an extra grand per month?

Comments

  2. LOVE this! I could use an extra $1000 a month! There are two college educations looming in the next 3-4 years, and I’d love to be prepared!

  3. Can’t wait to see the new website. Good luck with your new adventures!

  4. Earning extra money helps with the budget does it not. Hubby and I are semi retired but the semi part is making extra money buying and selling. Look forward to the future post on this subject. Always looking for ways to make extra money. Grace

  5. The same thing you did! Stay at home with the baby I have on the way. I am looking for and praying for a way to be able to do just that! Hopefully I will find some great avenues through the new blog 🙂 Thanks already for all you do on this one 😉

  6. Congratulations Melissa on making over $2000 from your blogging businesses! I will be following Grand Per Month and looking to learn how to make more money!

  7. This new website sounds great!

  8. Thats great Melissa. Congrats and best wishes for the new blog. I am looking forward to finding and learning and implementing new ideas. regards.

  9. Wonderful! This sounds like a fabulous new site. I’m looking forward to following you all.

  10. I’m excited…I’ve always wanted to earn extra from home (I’m homeschooling my 2 boys this next year) but have gotten so discouraged by scams, not being a “seller”, not being super tech-savvy… I’ve never found my nitch so I’m looking forward to some new ideas. I will use the $ to pay off our debt

    • I agree–there are a lot of scams out there. Many of the suggestions will be ones we have tried and found to work. I hope you find something that works for you. 🙂

    • Frannie,
I hear you about scams. Taking surveys is pointless and trying to sell stuff doesn’t work for me either. We aren’t saying that making extra money will be easy, but it is possible. All three of us happen to make an extra $1000 with blogging, but it doesn’t need to be just that. We want to stimulate your creative mind. We have nothing to sell, only information to offer. I tend to read a lot and I find a lot of good information and will do my best to put it all together and point you in the right direction. But it is up to you to actually move in that direction.

  11. Wow. With an extra $1000/month, my grad school bills would be taken care of — including summer term tuition that financial aid doesn’t cover. I’m working full-time as well as taking classes, so I don’t have the free time to devote to a side gig… but maybe some of the tips will be within my reach. Thanks for the link!

  12. Linden Townhouse says:

I look forward to reading this new blog! It will be good to read from legitimate sources.

  13. Extra grand per month would be nice. It will help me a lot with paying my debt as well as saving extra into my emergency fund. I am sure there will be money left for spending too. Making another grand per month is my goal in 2012.

  14. I am surely going to follow your new blog. I probably earn more than that but would like to change the source – need to do it ourside my ‘normal’ side hustle because I want to diversify.

  15. An extra grand a month? We wouldn’t have to live in our shack anymore!

  16. You can always find something to do with extra money. I could invest it or get a newer car for starters.

  17. That’s a great idea for a blog! I’ll be watching to see what ideas you have and if any would work for me once I get free of homework.

  18. I am a US Army Soldier and first time Mom of a 6 month old boy. I just liked your facebook page and will befollwing you on facebook and would like to be entered into the drawing for the Money Saving Mom Budget book. Thank you. Happy Holidays.

  19. $1K per month is my blogging/freelancing goal right now. It’s the amount that my husband and I have figured out that I need to bring in if I’m going to quit my full-time job to give my dream of being a freelance writer a try. Since I’m still working full-time, the extra $1K that I’m currently earning (roughly) is going towards building a large emergency fund.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys do with this.

  20. Jana,
It sounds like you are well on your way to being able to be a freelance writer. It is very doable. Building up a reserve fund is very smart as you know the income can be variable. Maybe someday you can write a post for us and encourage others when you quit your full-time job.

  21. Excellent idea for a new blog. People are always looking for ways that they can work from home instead of commuting back and forth to an office somewhere.

  22. I am excited to learn from the new site!

  23. My husband and I were just talking about a second job at the beginning of the year. with 1000 a month he would not have to do that and we could pay off the medical debt. It would totally change our life. I can’t wait to see what the new site brongs for us. Thank you.

    • Great! I hope you find some posts that help you find your own grand per month. It would be nice if your husband didn’t have to get a second job and you could pay off your medical debt.

  24. Hi Melissa! I can’t wait to tune in! I have a question, will you be posting actual opportunities, meaning any bloggers or websites who are actively looking to hire vitual assistants, writers, etc.?

    • That is a good idea, but we don’t have plans for that yet. There is a site, workathomemomrevolution.com, that does list jobs.

      • Thanks for your response, I will check it out! Can you share how you find your virtual assistant jobs? I know sometimes, its “who you know” but its not that easy if you don’t know anyone! lol

        • Mine was “who you know.” If you don’t know anyone, try to get further into the blogging community through forums and chats. After a few months, you may be able to work with someone there who needs help. You could also try odesk.com or elance.com, but those are generally paying, so I would only recommend going there to get your foot in the door and then branching out on your own.

  25. I really need this. I have $4k in medical bills I need to pay ff, $4k in credit cards, and $50k in student loans and car payments I need to pay off.
